Ecuador and Colombia are the main rose-producing countries of South America. Top-quality flowers grown there at high altitudes are exported mainly to the US, but also supply the high-end markets in Russia, Europe and Asia. Recognising the commercial importance of this region, Schreurs has established subsidiaries in both Ecuador and Colombia.

Some of the largest and most beautiful roses are grown in Ecuador. Working originally with local agents, Schreurs has been selling its roses there since 1997. In 2003 we founded Schreurs Ecuador, a wholly-owned subsidiary with Santiago Torres as its general manager. Within a few years the new company was able to open its own farm at Granobles, in a beautiful part of the Cayambe region with virgin soils, where it is surrounded by some of Ecuador’s top growers. With its own showroom and an extensive code testing. facility, this farm is now growing roses of very good quality in conditions representative of the area.

We are progressive and innovative in our growing. Our farm is one of the first farms there to use biological pest control and UV light to combat diseases. This demonstrates our commitment to people and to the environment.

Because of the unique conditions in the country, Schreurs Ecuador is our main test facility in South America. At our farm we have allocated 3,300 m2 as show space, 2,500 m2 for testing new codes and 7,500 m2 for eye material.

We do this to generate realistic feedback from the trade, so that we gain a good idea of the variety’s true potential. Moreover, this ensures that eye material is already available by the time the first grower decides to enter the market commercially with a specific variety.”
