Africa is one of the most important regions supplying flowers to the European market. Production has expanded significantly since the 1980’s, so that the continent now plays a leading role in the global floriculture industry.
Founded ten years ago, Schreurs East Africa Ltd. (SEA) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Schreurs. It acts as a representative office and operates from our production farm in Naivasha, Kenya, where numerous varieties are tested, marketed and sold. Extensive testing is also conducted in several African countries.
We are always looking for new ways to add value to our products and services in East Africa. For example, we have established tailor-made constructions with growers for a number of varieties. The goal is to grow together. We also enter into special arrangements, like full or shared exclusivity or participation in the growing of new introductions.
The SEA show greenhouse in Naivasha covers approximately 7,000 m². This is where we test, exhibit and introduce our African varieties, concentrating upon those which meet the specific demands of the European consumer and can survive in local growing conditions. Our aim is to bring many good quality, profitable and long-lasting varieties to the market, now and in the future.
New varieties first produced at Schreurs Naivasha
Our Naivasha greenhouse currently has 2.3 hectares in production for the extended testing of new varieties. We bring these to the market, as Schreurs Flowers, at the FloraHolland auction in Aalsmeer.
This approach adds value by generating information about the growing of the flowers, their commercial and transportation characteristics in a real market situation, and also creates initial demand.
Haiko Backer, General Manager - Schreurs East Africa:
“At Schreurs East Africa, we are very client-oriented and flexible. That is our strength and our distinction. When a client asks for eye material, for instance, we will arrange this within a few days. I am proud that we have such a good relationship with so many growers in Africa! You are always welcome to visit our show greenhouse, at weekends as well as during the week. Just give us a call and it will be arranged.”
