Assignments Interflora World Cup - Neil Wittaker, United Kingdom
The first event, Designers Choice is themed "Flowers on the Orient". Contestants will complete a design up to 1.2 metres deep and wide and 2.25 metres high within 2 hours.
On the same day they will have their artistic flair tested again with a "Surprise Item" which they will complete in just over an hour. This is an exciting test of how spontaneous these designers from around the world can be with only 15 minutes to view the various items presented to them and create something amazing.
Assignment 1: Flowers on the Orient. What can you tell us about your "Flowers on the Orient" creation?
When designing the framework, I drew inspiration from symbols I associate with the Orient, predominantly the Chinese Junk boats and the flowing lines of Chinese script. The colour scheme of copper/orange, purple and cerise was inspired by the rich, vibrant and varied culture of the Orient. The orange is important in oriental culture, and in Feng Shui represents the sense of purpose and organisation that characterises modern China, while purple is said to bring good luck.
Assignment 1: Flowers on the Orient. What do you consider typical flowers of the orient? (Do you like to work with them?)
I associate the obvious exotic, tropical flowers and plants with the Orient, such as orchids and bromeliads. In addition some of the unusual foliages and plants give a steamy equatorial ambiance - the vanda roots and hanging plants such as Nepanthus give the feel of being in a tropical botanic garden. I love working with unusual tropical flowers and foliages, particularly the less obvious ones, and using them alongside temperate flowers can give interesting contrasts in complementary styles, forms and textures.
Assignment 1: Flowers on the Orient. Which aspect(s) of this arrangement makes it typically your design? (Flowers on the Orient.)
The vibrant, contrasting colour scheme I have used is one of my signature elements, along with the clean, uncluttered lines which are typical of my work.

Assignment 2: Surprise item
Shanghai Tang
Assignment: Create within the time allowed an in store display for the famous Shanghai Tang Clothing and Accessories Store. Your design should reflect the vibrancy and contemporary ambience of this retail outlet. You do not have to use all of the materials provided, you may decide not to use some of the items at all.
Please tell use something about your Shanghai Tang creation.
The shape of my arrangement is based on a clothing rack in a store. I used two colours of flowers; pink and green. These colours match with the colours of the shopping bag we had to use.
