Bondet Limited was established in 2004 and is based in Nanyuki, a town at the slopes of Mt Kenya. The farm is the brainchild of three brothers, Andrew Fernandez, Richard Fernandez and Peter Fernandez and was created with an aim of catering for the demands of a continually evolving marketplace. Bondet has 45 years experience in agriculture and 25 years in floriculture. The farm specializes in F1 hybrid flower seeds and has already build a reputation for excellent and reliable results. From August 2008 Bondet increased its scope to Rose growing. This has seen us grow the company grow Schreurs varieties such as Sputnik! The production, testing, processing and packaging of seeds are done on the farm and rigorous checks are adhered to at each stage. Bondet mainly focuses on the European market, seeing the company export 100% of their produce to Europe to be sold mainly through the Aalsmeer auction. In adherence to environmental concerns Bondet ensures that it follows to the book regulations stipulated by the Kenya Flower Council. The company minimizes chemical pest control and instead employs integrated pest control systems. They also save on water by monitoring the amount of water in the soil through an instrument known as a diviner. They also harvest rain water and have large reservoirs as well as two boreholes. Being located strategically at the equator gives Bondet an excellent advantage of being able to produce the whole year due to the availability of sunshine, a good altitude of 2100m and availability of water. They are able to produce bicolor roses with pronounced colour. In line with technological advances the company introduced computerized irrigation, and upgraded their green houses. They also undertake soil monitoring to determine soil moisture content. Bondet is also involved in Corporate Social Responsibitly projects tro uplift the lives of the people living in the surrounding community. This includes contributing towards local road repairs and also assisting the local schools through book donations and building of classrooms. The company also works with the local government department in charge of conserving the forest and other natural habitats. |
